Where Point Reyes Station is
The town is just south and east of the southern end of Tomales Bay, and slightly east of the San Andreas Fault where it disappears under the bay. By State Route 1 it is 15 miles northwest of Stinson Beach and 17 miles southeast of Tomales. Inverness is 3.5 miles to the northwest.
The railroad town
This was Coast Miwok land. The town's name comes from the nearby Point Reyes Peninsula and from its start as a stop on the North Pacific Coast Railroad, which ran between Cazadero and the Sausalito ferry. When the railroad arrived in 1875 the place was called Olema Station. The Point Reyes post office opened in 1882.
Point Reyes National Seashore
Most visitors come through town on the way to Point Reyes National Seashore. The park's visitor center is the starting point for a walking tour of the San Andreas Fault.
Farms and food
Several agricultural companies are based here, many of them using organic and sustainable practices. They include Cowgirl Creamery and Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company.

Point Reyes Station is served by the Shoreline Unified School District.

Point Reyes Station is unincorporated, so there is no city hall. The County of Marin provides general government services, including law enforcement, land use planning, the library, public health and code enforcement.
