Larkspur is a city of 13,064 people in central Marin, about 3 miles south of San Rafael. It is home to the Larkspur ferry terminal, the county's main commuter ferry to San Francisco.

Where Larkspur is

Larkspur lies directly south of Kentfield and just north of Corte Madera, with Highway 101 along its eastern side. The city incorporated in 1908.

Downtown and neighborhoods

Magnolia Avenue is the main street. It runs through the Larkspur Downtown Historic District, also called Old Downtown Larkspur, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The restored Art Deco Lark Theater is part of that district.

Madrone Canyon is a residential area set in a redwood grove along Larkspur Creek. Part of Greenbrae is inside the city limits, and the rest of Greenbrae is unincorporated.

Getting around

Golden Gate Ferry runs from the Larkspur ferry terminal at Larkspur Landing to the San Francisco Ferry Building. It is the main commuter ferry between Marin and the city, and there is special service to Oracle Park for San Francisco Giants games. The rail line through Larkspur carried commuters until 1941.

Police

Larkspur shares its police department with Corte Madera and San Anselmo. The combined agency is the Central Marin Police Authority.

Schools

The Larkspur-Corte Madera School District serves most of the city for elementary and middle school. Neil Cummins Elementary School and Hall Middle School take students from both towns. Part of Larkspur is in the Kentfield Elementary School District. Redwood High School, part of the Tamalpais Union High School District, is in Larkspur.
