Where Kentfield is
Kentfield covers about 3 square miles in the Ross Valley, with Ross to the north and Larkspur to the south. For census purposes the Kentfield area also takes in the unincorporated part of neighboring Greenbrae, and the two share the 94904 ZIP code.
How it got its name
The place has had four names. James Ross, a Scot who made his money in the wholesale liquor trade in San Francisco, set up a trading post here called Ross Landing. The Kent family later built an estate called Tamalpais, and the railroad station took that name. In the 1890s the station became Kent, and when the first post office opened in 1905 the name settled as Kentfield. William Kent, a son of the family, served in Congress and donated the land that became Muir Woods.
College of Marin and schools
College of Marin has its main campus in Kentfield, across the street from Kent Middle School. Most of the community is in the Kentfield Elementary School District, which runs Bacich Elementary School and Kent Middle School. Small parts are in the Larkspur and Ross elementary districts. All of Kentfield is in the Tamalpais Union High School District. Marin Catholic High School, a private Catholic school, is also here.
Government and services
Kentfield is unincorporated, so there is no city hall. The County of Marin provides general government services, including law enforcement, land use planning, the library, public health and code enforcement. County offices are at the Marin County Civic Center in San Rafael, and departments are listed on the County of Marin website. For emergencies call 911.
