Where Fairfax is
Fairfax covers 2.2 square miles, all of it land. Unincorporated Sleepy Hollow lies to the north, and protected watershed land runs south toward Mount Tamalpais. Sir Francis Drake Boulevard is the main road in from San Anselmo and continues west to the coast.
The town is named for Lord Charles Snowden Fairfax, a hereditary peer who served as speaker of the California Assembly. Fairfax incorporated in 1931.
Downtown
Town Hall is on Bolinas Road in the center of town. Central Field, also called Contratti Park, is the downtown ball field. In the mid-1960s it hosted a softball game between Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead.
Cycling and the outdoors
Fairfax is a regular stop for mountain bikers and road cyclists because Mount Tamalpais is so close. In 2015 Joe Breeze and other members of the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame opened the Marin Museum of Bicycling downtown.

Fairfax is in the Ross Valley Elementary School District and the Tamalpais Union High School District.
